Couriers Compromise on Greenways

The recent introduction of cameras onto some of the busiest greenways in Scotland has caused nothing short of an outcry from the public. With some council’s being forced to remove the camera’s only after a month of being up and running, it raises the question of what can be done to make it fair for people to use them?

The most important thing that we realise as people working in the transport industry is that local government enforce these rules for a reason. The way in which they go about it however could be changed.

What if we as a courier company were to negotiate with local councils on the use of the bus lanes?

We can think of a lot of alternative ways in which the council could enforce such rules. For example with being in a busy industry it would help if our drivers had access to some of these lanes during some of the busier times of the day.

We would be more than happy to pay some sort of annual fee which would then allow us to us the lanes at set times or whatever times had been agreed by the council and ourselves.

It would not only benefit us being able to use the bus lanes but would also I’m sure be an annual payment in which the council could use to spend on things like health and childcare.

Also being able to have the use of the greenways would go a long way in helping us to reduce our carbon footprint, which is surely something that is extremely high on the agenda for local councils.

Our work can be looked at as a public service. It’s important for us as couriers to make sure we are delivering goods on time to customers and if we were to have the option of paying to use the greenways it would be a no brainer for us.

When you work in this industry you have to look at any obstacles that will step in the way. This is what we are doing all the time and that’s why it makes sense for us to think about this type of proposition.

So what we say to the local governments out there is to consider something like this, at a time when there are cuts to budgets and the economy is uncertain, take advantage of negotiations from companies like us.

We are not looking for something for nothing but are offering a genuine idea which will help with both congestion on the road, carbon emissions and will offer a bit of extra money to spend on more important things.
