Paul Wilkie, Despatch Control Assistant

At Eagle Couriers, we take immense pride in our commitment to providing top-notch courier services in Scotland to each one of our valued customers.

Our passionate team members are the driving force behind our success, and today, we want to introduce you to Paul Wilkie. With over 11 years of experience under his belt, Paul has seen it all and continues to shine as a vital part of our team:

  1. Tell us about yourself

I began my journey with Eagle Couriers 11 years ago as a driver. Two years later, I transitioned into an employed role starting as a Despatch Control Assistant.

Over time, I steadily progressed to become the lead controller, and now, I find myself in my current position today leading our Edinburgh & Scotland East Circuits.

  1. Describe a day in the life at Eagle Couriers

Working at Eagle Couriers can be a delicate balancing act. Every morning, as you step into the office, you’re greeted by a screen filled with bookings that require completion, along with the count of available drivers for the day. You get information on the quantity and types of vans at our disposal and then we get to work!

The customer will have their individual request on when they need their parcel collected and delivered, and we’ll need to use this information to make it coincide with when/what vans leave.

Every day is completely different, which is the beauty of the job.

  1. What are your hobbies and interests?

I used to play a lot of sports but now I mainly watch it, formula one is a favorite of mine. Spending time with family is really important to me so I usually spend a lot of my spare time with them at home or visiting.

I also love eating out and having a nice glass of wine with a meal.

  1. What’s been your highlights during the job?

My role is like doing a different jigsaw puzzle each day and I enjoy every day of it.

We have the same goal day in day out to complete the challenge of making everything run as smoothly as possible. At the end of each day, I go home feeling like I did well and have a sense of achievement.

  1. What’s been a memorable day in your job?

Memorable days for me have been delivering trophies, we delivered the Calcutta cup which was a is one of the cooler things I have had the opportunity to deliver. I’ve also delivered a prosthetic leg which was an interesting parcel to deliver across the country. If it fits in the van nothing’s off limits!

  1. What’s your favorite music artist or band?

I’m a fan of lots of music like oasis and stereophonics but also like even the music my mum listens to too which can be very different from that.

  1. What’s your favorite food?

I’m a big fan of Thai food which is probably down to the fact that my wife is Thai, and she is an amazing cook.

  1. Do you have any tips for someone that might be starting out in your job role?

The main thing I would say is to keep calm and not to panic. It’s important to think ahead before making any decisions and to not make allocations until it’s clearer on what needs to be done. Communication is extremely important both internally with colleagues and with customers and suppliers.

I would also say don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.
